Chapter Six - Jason

“The internship is going so great,” Katie said happily as she sipped her drink. She was practically bouncing around in her seat, genuinely joyful. “Helen is amazing to work with, and we’re getting so much work done! I even helped write two of the stories! Isn’t that great?”

Jason nodded, keeping his eye on the door for Helen. She had messaged him back already, agreeing to meet for lunch. “That’s great, sweetheart. I’m glad you’re enjoying yourself.”

His daughter leaned in close, lowering her voice. “Is there any more information you can give us on the motel murders case, Dad?” she whispered. “We’re having a lot of trouble drumming up information for an article, and I know Helen is stressing about it”.

Jason clenched his jaw. Katie was beginning to sound a lot like Helen. “I have already provided Helen with all the information available on the case. It’s moving very slowly, and there’s not much I can do about it.”

Katie shrugged, seemingly unbothered by his response. “That’s fine. I figured I would at least ask.”

The waiter approached, politely asking if they were ready to order. As Katie began to speak, Jason interrupted her. “Actually, we’re still waiting on one more person. Can we wait until they come?”

“Absolutely,” the waiter agreed, excusing himself.

His daughter gave him a strange look. “We’re waiting on someone else? Who?”

“Someone,” he answered vaguely, casting his glance once more towards the door.

Jason had kept the invitations separate to the two women. Katie thought they were having their typical father daughter lunch together, but that wasn’t the case. Helen on the other hand likely believed they were going on a date.

Jason intended on getting both Helen and Katie together and discussing the approach they were taking on investigating the story. Overnight, he had done some deep thinking, and he realized that they were likely continuing Helen’s plan of going on dates to try to get more information about the murders and the murderer, and if she was still doing that, then that meant Katie was involved. That didn’t sit right with Jason, and he intended to speak his mind on it. There had to be other ways to investigate the case.

A few minutes later, Helen appeared, sauntering her way over to their table and flashing a sexy grin towards Jason. Her smile faltered when she spotted Katie, who was busy staring down at her phone. Her expression took on an uncertain look, and she looked as though she wanted to walk away. Jason waved her over, not giving her the opportunity. “Helen! Over here,” he called out.

Katie looked up, giving Helen a friendly smile. “Hi, Helen!” She looked at Jason. “You didn’t tell me Helen was joining us.”

“And you didn’t tell me Katie was joining us,” Helen said stiffly, forcing a smile onto her face as she slid into the booth beside his daughter. “What a pleasant surprise.”

“Well, I thought the three of us should enjoy a meal together. After all, we’re all covering the same case.”

A look of hope blossomed onto Helen's face.
